With a vast celebrity following and increasingly shocking exposés on the American meat industry, veganism has recently found a stronghold in the U.S. The number of vegans has more than doubled within the past four years. Despite America’s movement towards reduced meat consumption, the question still stands; is veganism here to stay? The majority of vegans return to eating meat after a year of attempting the vegan diet. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that most of the health benefits that were previously associated with vegan diets could instead be related to reduced consumption of processed foods. Is the so called ‘sustainable vegan lifestyle’ truly sustainable?
